Leonard Mathers was the editor of the Lancashire Leisure magazine. When the publication ran a "Pub of the Year" competition in 2012, Gloria Price entered the Rovers Return Inn and was at pains to win, bending over backwards to impress B&B customer Laurence Carnegie - who turned out to be one of the judges and mistakenly took Dennis Tanner to be the mystery drinker who was also being sent round to assess the entrants. In November, Mr Mathers phoned the pub to inform that they had won and arranged a presentation at the Rovers that evening. Soon after arriving, Mr Mathers began reading out some of the customer comment cards.

It turned out that Gloria had read some of the confidential cards and rewritten some of the less than complimentary ones herself when Norris Cole accused her of forging a comment card attributed to him. Gloria tried to grab the plaque from Leonard but the award was instead passed to the Weatherfield Arms.
