Larine Baumgarten was the French wife of Joe, a former GI who had been stationed near Weatherfield in the Second World War and who had lodged for a time with Minnie Caldwell.
In June 1961 he returned find Minnie and, having been successful, he and Larine treated the old lady to a meal out with liqueurs. She in turn "treated" Larine to a rendition of Mademoiselle from Armentières which she claimed had been fully appreciated. There then followed a nightclub where Minnie was unimpressed with the powder room, saying to Larine that they should wash their hands, use the scent machine and get a taxi back home.
