Christopher "Kit" Green (born "Zodiac") is Bernie Winter's youngest son who she gave up for adoption as a baby. He grew up to become a police detective, and currently serves with the Weatherfield CID.
In 2024, Kit's life was turned upside down when Bernie showed up on his doorstep seeking a relationship with him. Kit accepted his siblings Gemma and Paul into his life, but refused to forgive Bernie for abandoning him. The following year, his ex-girlfriend Daisy Midgeley miscarried his baby.
As a detective, Kit plays fast and loose with the rules, and has been known to tamper with evidence in order to get the job done. He lives at 9 Redbank Apartments and is currently in a relationship with Sarah Platt.
Biography[]
Zodiac was born on 20th May 1993. He was the result of a one-night stand with a man who a drunk Bernie Winter met in Manchester's Haçienda nightclub where she went after her split from her partner Denny Foreman. Already the mother of two-year old twins Paul and Gemma, Bernie wasn't in the right frame of mind to look after a crying baby and begged the social worker to put him into care. Along with his usual baby paraphernalia, Zac was taken away with a small green jade elephant, an offshoot of Bernie's esoteric interests in alternative therapies and the like. Two years later, Bernie found out that a couple with the surname Green had adopted him and changed his unusual astrological name to Christopher.
Regretting giving him up, Bernie found the wrench of losing her child traumatic to bear and each year wrote out birthday cards for him which she was unable to pass on. For the best part of three decades, she kept the secret and her own emotional pain to herself, struggling to raise the twins while all the time dancing on the right and wrong side of the law.
In the meantime, Kit prospered in the care of his adoptive parents and joined the police force. In 2014, Bernie and Kit made tentative contact and arranged to meet, but Bernie couldn't bring herself to go through with the proposed meeting in a cafe, having got herself drunk to cope with the upcoming encounter, and leading Kit to think of himself as abandoned again. Rising through the ranks to a detective constable, in 2024 he was transferred to Weatherfield police's CID reporting to DS Lisa Swain and working on the case of the missing Lauren Bolton.
That same year, Denny came back into Bernie's life at a time when she was trying to cope with Paul's deterioration with motor neurone disease and the forthcoming loss of her son. His negative presence reignited her old feelings of loss and she began to search for Christopher, visiting every known address in Manchester where such a man lived. She unwittingly traced him to 36 Lidgate Avenue where she went along with his mistaken assumption that she had come for an advertised cleaning job in order that she could get inside the house. Once there, she was caught by Kit searching round the house and came clean as to why she was there. Kit lied that he was not adopted but once Bernie was gone, he opened a drawer and took out of it a small jade green elephant - the only link to his past life.
Following the encounter, Kit consulted Bernie's long police record and began to harass her, arresting her for being drunk and disorderly and impounding her car for being one day late with its MOT. On this occasion, she went to Weatherfield Police Station to arrange for its return and was present when PC Craig Tinker presented him with a small cake and candle to celebrate his 31st birthday, leading her to realise that this man was indeed her natural son. The two spoke at some length where Kit made his anger at her abandonment clear, saying that although they were natural mother and son, he refused to acknowledge her as anything more and wanted to get on with his life without her.
In the meantime, Kit had encountered his half-siblings without revealing who he was to them. Aware of Paul's MND, he stepped in to help him when an inconsiderate driver used a disabled space outside Weatherfield General that Paul was waiting to use and sent him on his way with a flash of his police card. He also helped Gemma avoid being charged with shoplifting a pair of shoes for her daughter Carys by digging up dirt on the shop manager, Bruce Ruskin, and forcing him to drop the charge. After his adopted mother died, Kit revealed himself to Paul and Gemma as their brother. They were outraged that Bernie gave him away, robbing Paul of the chance to ever really get to know him. As they spurned their mother, Kit gloated to her that he'd given her a taste of her own medicine. Paul brought his warring family together by telling them that his dying wish was that they were reconciled, but Kit only reluctantly accepted Bernie's apoplogy for what she did to him and when they were on their own told her that he would always dislike her.
Working on Lauren's case, Kit set up convicted molester Nathan Curtis for the crime by planting one of the missing girl's hairs in the back of his builder's van and seemed in his boss's eyes to bring the matter to a successful conclusion. In August, he and Craig caught Craig's mother Beth Sutherland handing over counterfeit t-shirts to trader Sid. Kit let Beth go but behind her back he reached a 50/50 arrangement with Sid for himself. Beth later spotted Sid handing Kit's cut over to him and blackmailed him for £400. Kit turned the tables by getting Craig drunk and getting him to admit to covering up his girlfriend Faye Windass's involvement in Ted Spear's death, and threatening Beth with destroying her son's career unless she left Weatherfield.
Kit continued to help his siblings, buying 5 Coronation Street in order to rent it back to Gemma and Chesney when they were served with an eviction notice. He softened towards Bernie somewhat when he saw her skilfully revive Paul when he stopped breathing suddenly. He witnessed her crying afterwards and comforted her. In September, when it became clear that Paul's death was imminent, Kit located his uncontactable husband Billy Mayhew and alerted him, allowing him to say a final goodbye over the phone.
Also that month, when solicitor Joel Deering was investigating for drugging Lauren Bolton, and the lead detective DS Swain was compromised due to Joel's threats to her daughter Betsy, DI Costello removed her from the case and Kit took over. When Joel missed his plea hearing, Kit went looking for the solicitor outside his flat and found him attempting to flee. Joel threatened to expose Kit for setting Nathan if he arrested him, and Kit allowed him to leave in his car. Within hours, Joel's trussed-up body was found in a river, and the police determined that he was killed by a crowbar or similar. Kit's suspicions were concentrated on Swain after finding threatening text messages to Joel on her phone, and seemingly confirmed when the police found a rock with Joel's blood on it at the viaduct with a can of CS spray "stolen" from the detective. However, Lauren confessed to killing Joel in order to save Max Turner, and was charged with the crime.
Kit meanwhile had moved into the Rovers Return. Taking a fancy to barmaid Daisy Midgeley, he got a list of her likes and dislikes from her unwitting ex-boyfriend Ryan Connor. Daisy was impressed by her and Kit being seemingly so compatible, and agreed to go out with him. In November, Kit bought 9 Redbank Apartments and left the Rovers. He continued to see other women, including sleeping with Shona Platt when they bumped into each other an argument between her and David. With matters remaining tense in the Platt household, Shona was tempted to see Kit again but after going to his temporary place of residence at the Chariot Square Hotel, she changed her mind and disavowed their fling. Later, while investigating the theft of Debbie Webster's car, Kit deleted CCTV footage showing Daisy with the car, and was angry when Shona reported a hit-and-run to the police involving the same vehicle which Daisy hadn't told him about.
In December, David was rocked when Kit effectively admitted to being the man Shona had slept with. He became hell bent on revenge, firstly by driving at Kit with his car and then by trying to record him admitting to setting up Nathan, but the bent copper was too wily for him. Kit smashed his own windscreen and tried to arrest David for the damage, but Sarah was quickly on the scene, forcing him to halt the attempt. Instead, he told Harvey Gaskell's heavies Logan and Matty Radcliffe - who were after David for stealing money from Harvey - that they were free to do what they liked to David. Appalled by Kit's behaviour and Daisy for standing by him, Shona told the barmaid that she'd slept with Kit, and Daisy broke it off with him.
In the New Year, Kit bumped into Daisy at Weatherfield General and heard from a nurse that she was pregnant. When Daisy told Kit that he was the father, he offered to provide for the child financially but refused to be involved otherwise, choosing his career over fatherhood. However, after being riled up by Bethany Platt, Daisy announced her pregnancy in the Rovers, saying that either Kit or Daniel Osbourne could be the father. Kit apologised to Daisy for his previous attitude and joined her for a scan, but when he subsequently failed to join her for a prenatal appointment, Daisy lost faith in him and decided to keep the results of a DNA test to herself. When he learned that Daniel had been told he was the baby's father, Kit played it cool but was secretly upset by the news. However, after making a drunken pass at him, Jenny Connor hinted that he was indeed the father. Kit advised Daniel not to be so trusting of Daisy, which lead to a confrontation between the pair and Daisy walking out into the street, where she was hit by a car. Although she wasn't seriously hurt, the baby didn't survive.
Investigating the crash, Kit discovered that the driver, Andy Garland, was a friend of David's, who had been hit along with Daisy. After David unwittingly confirmed Kit's suspicions that he'd arranged his own hit-and-run to save his family from Harvey, Kit arrested him and drove him to a lockup, scaring him that he was going to take extra-judicial action. Admitting that he should never have slept with Shona, Kit offered a truce, and the pair called it quits, both apologising for messing up each other's lives.
In April, Kit took up with Sarah Platt after coming to her aid following a mugging. Returning from France, David was outraged that Sarah had hooked up with the man who seduced his wife but was persuaded into letting bygones be bygones.
