Kevin Whately (born 6th February 1951 in Brampton, near Carlisle) appeared on Coronation Street in February 1981 as Kevin, a lorry driver dining at Jim's Cafe.
Educated at Barnard Castle School, he furthered his studies in accounting and finance at Newcastle Polytechnic prior to training as an actor at the Central School of Speech and Drama, graduating in 1975. He began his working life as a folk singer.
His other credits include roles in Out of the Past, Angels, Agatha Christie's Miss Marple: A Murder is Announced, Peak Practice, The Broker's Man, Pure Wickedness, Merseybeat and The Inheritance, but rose to stardom by starring as Neville Hope in ITV's hit comedy series Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, as Dectective Sergeant Lewis in Inspector Morse" and the titular role in its sequel, Lewis.
Film roles include The Return of the Soldier, B & B, The English Patient, Paranoid, Purely Belter, Silent Cry and Sunday for Sammy.
On stage, he appeared in productions of Absurd Person Singular, Cracks in a City, The Gingerbread Man, King Lear, The Rivals, Romeo and Juliet, The Widowing of Mrs Holroyd, Our Own Kind, Twelve Angry Men, Snake in the Grass and How I Learned to Drive.
He is married to actress Madelaine Newton, who herself appeared on Coronation Street.
