Kay was the wife of a man whose motorbike was stolen and "sold" to Peter Barlow who was then arrested for handling stolen goods. Peter was convinced that there was a viable alternative to trading by capitalism causing an exasperated Carla Barlow to make a bet with him that he couldn't trade up from an onion bhaji to a motorbike, with her offering to buy him a leather jacket if she lost the bet. Peter went into the transaction with a vengeance, managing to trade items up each time to the point where he had a tablet as his bargaining chip. He offered to trade this and £200 pounds with Benn for a motorbike that he was offering for sale but almost immediately afterwards PC Jess Heywood spotted the vehicle and arrested Peter for being in possession of stolen goods. When Benn was subsequently arrested, Peter was let go and his tablet returned to him in the reception of Weatherfield Police Station where Kay was waiting to see an officer. She overheard a conversation between Peter and Jess about his bet and approached him outside the station telling him that she had bought the bike for her husband who had then cheated on her. To take revenge on him she was willing to accept the tablet with its broken screen in exchange for the bike in order to upset her unfaithful partner. With just a few hours to go before Carla could claim victory with the bet, Peter took possession of the bike and emerged victorious.
