Kate Ford was born 29th December 1976 in Salford. The daughter of a teacher and a businessman, she first appeared as an extra in Coronation Street in the early-1990s. After taking part in a local theatre group, she trained at the Webber Douglas School of Acting in London and took over the role of Tracy Barlow from December 2002 onwards. She quit the role in 2006, with the character departing in April 2007. After three years, Ford reprised the role for a short time basis from May to June 2010, before then returning to the role full-time in December that year.

She has also appeared in Doctors, and Cambridge Spies.

Ford was formerly married to Jon Connerty and adopted his surname during their marriage. The couple, who have a son born in 2008, split up in September 2013. Their divorce was finalised two years later, in 2015.
