The Judge presided over the plea and trial preparation hearing when Yasmeen Metcalfe appeared before the bench, accused of the attempted murder of her husband Geoff.

Having sustained months of abusive bullying and coercive control at Geoff's hands, Yasmeen was in an utter daze as she stood in the dock and the court clerk was forced to repeat the charge after the Judge asked her if she understood what was being said to her. To the relief of her granddaughter Alya, who had been worried that Yasmeen's state of mind would lead her to accept her guilt, she entered a formal plea of "not guilty". Her barrister, Paula Martin, had to admit to the annoyed judge that she was equally surprised by the plea and asked for an adjournment to consider the matter. He agreed, but remanded Yasmeen in custody pending the next hearing.
