Coronation Street Wiki

Jon Spear was the grandson of Ted Spear, an old man who died soon after stepping out in front of a car being driven by Faye Windass. He subsequently fell in love with Emma Brooker and the two moved to Australia to run a bar on Bancoora Beach.

The unexpected catalyst for their romance occurred on New Year's Day 2022. Faye and Emma were returning from an overnight party with Faye, a learner driver, at the wheel of her father's borrowed taxi, and a tipsy Emma accompanying her. Ted, his leg in a cast, dropped his shopping, and stepped out into the road where the vehicle hit him. He refused the shocked girls' offer to take him to Weatherfield General and instead allowed them to take him back to his flat where they fussed over the genial old man. Returning afterwards to check up on him, they discovered that he had died in his armchair, and they went into a full panic mode, having found out that in their intoxicated state neither of them should have been behind the wheel of the car. Instead of doing the sensible thing and confessing, they cleaned the flat of their presence but in the process, Emma was spotted by a delivery driver, Faye lost a nail down the kitchen sink and the two of them forgot to take Ted's crutch out of the back of the taxi.

Consumed with guilt, the two girls loved on shredded nerves. The police found the body after Emma gave them an anonymous tip-off while Craig Tinker, a policeman himself, set himself the mental puzzled of tracing the owner of the crutch as a boredom relief while recovering from a sprained ankle. Unable to get Ted out of her mind, Emma attended his funeral where she met the gentle, intelligent and personable Jon for the first time. He introduced himself to her saying they were the only two young people in attendance and she gave a guarded version of the truth as to how they met when he asked. Jon was distraught at the loss of his beloved grandpa and Emma tried to console him, but her attempts were stymied by a series of texts from Faye which alerted her to the fact that the police's investigations had led to an e-fit of her supplied from information supplied by the delivery driver and she had to do her best to conceal her face.

Craig also saw the image and easily recognised it. Getting the full story out of Faye, he reluctantly went to Ted's flat in uniform to retrieve the lost nail in the sink and bumped into Jon there. He assumed Craig was part of a further search team and thanked him for the work he was doing.

The coast was apparently clear for the girls but Emma had fallen for Jon and, after a few weeks, began to follow him at Freshco where he worked as a trolley collector. He, likewise, had been taken with the sparky girl and was amused and flattered that he was the object of her attentions. He followed her back to the Rovers where she worked where he admitted his attraction towards her, asking her to go for a meal with him. The two further bonded at Speed Daal where they found common ground when they admitted to their usual nervousness in relationships and got along famously. The two were spotted by Craig and Faye who put pressure on their friend not to pursue their relationship and put them in danger of imprisonment for perverting the cause of justice. She reluctantly agreed but couldn't acquiesce when he continued to text her and called on her, suggesting they had a film night together where they could indulge in their shared love of classic movies. Behind Craig and Faye's back, Emma continued to see Jon, all the time trying to put him off from coming back to Coronation Street and meeting her friends, saying that they would merely say she was moving on too soon from her recent disastrous relationship with Curtis Delamere. Hearing from Jon that he was shortly to move to Australia, Emma resolved to just enjoy their time together.

The two faced exposure when Beth Sutherland came across the two and saw Emma's reluctance to introduce her new friend to her. Faye and Craig guessed who the young man had been and pushed Emma to admit to still seeing Jon, something she denied doing, saying he was another man called Martin.

The two enjoyed an overnight stay together at the Chariot Square Hotel where Jon told her that he had never felt so comfortable with anyone else in his life, something that Emma agreed with. She took a day off sick from work to be with him further and the two enjoyed a blissful time in each other's company, aware that their split when he decamped to Australia was looming closer.

Exposure was imminent though and Emma tempted fate when she invited Jon to her flat, knowing that Craig and Faye would be out. She recognised the beach where he intended to work from her own childhood when her mother, Fiona Middleton, took her on trips there. He impulsively told her he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her and asked her to move out there with him. Although Emma managed to get Jon out of the way before Craig and Faye came back, he returned to collect his mobile phone and thought he recognised Craig. He soon remembered meeting him at Ted's flat but wasn't immediately suspicious in any further way, his mind being fully occupied when Emma told him they had to finish their relationship.

When he had time to think, Jon confronted Emma, wanting to know why she had kept him at arm's length from Craig and Faye and why she had suddenly dumped him. Knowing how upset her friend was, Faye admitted to the truth and the complete story came out. After a period of reflection, Jon came to the conclusion that his beloved grandfather's last moments had been happy in their company and he told Emma that he would not be making a police complaint and reiterated his request that she come with him to Australia. Emma happily accepted and the only remaining problem was to break the news to her family. Father Steve McDonald took badly to the news and blamed Jon fairly and squarely for the loss of his daughter, seeming to be impervious to his charms and insisting on checking his credentials.

Emma talked Steve into giving her his blessing and the pair left for London to prepare for their new life down under.

The character's voice was heard in the first instalment of Episode 10594/5 (23rd March 2022), but was uncredited for this contribution.
