Bishop John Thornber was a former bishop of Weatherfield.
Bishop Thornber visited Billy Mayhew, the vicar of St. Mary's Church in July 2016. Also present was Todd Grimshaw, pretending to be a churchgoer with flowers and wine for the church tombola. Todd spoke to John about his views on homosexuality. As he left, Todd and Billy passionately kissed.
The bishop returned again in September, telling Billy that there had been a complaint about Todd's presence at the vicarage. John told Billy that Todd must leave, causing Billy to doubt his faith.
In December, Billy had decided to leave the church to have a relationship with Todd, shocking John. However, in January 2017, Billy decided to return to the church and the bishop gave him his old parish back.
In March 2018, John sent Billy to rehab after Eileen Phelan contacted him.
