John Owen Comer (born 1st March 1924 in Stretford, died 11th February 1984 in Blackpool) appeared on Coronation Street in three roles:
- Mr Birtles, the father of Sheila Birtles, appearing between December 1962 and January 1963
- A taxi driver who took Ena Sharples and her great-nephew Tom Schofield to Ringway Airport for their flight to New York in June 1965
- Building foreman Wilf Jones in April 1968.
He also appeared in Street spin-offs Pardon the Expression in 1966 and Turn out the Lights in 1967.
John found fame relatively late in his career through his roles in the TV sitcoms I Didn't Know You Cared and in Last of the Summer Wine where he played the cafe owner Sid. He also appeared in Jack Rosenthal's film version of The Lovers. Earlier bit-part credits included roles in Friday Night, Z Cars, Dixon of Dock Green, The Flaxton Boys, Bless This House, Crown Court, The Life of Riley and Emmerdale Farm.
Film credits included roles in I'm All Right Jack (alongside his brother, Tony Comer), Hell is a City, Allez France!, Happy Deathday, Battle of Britain, Mr. Forbush and the Penguins, The Lovers! and Memoirs of a Survivor.
On stage, he appeared in a 1971 production of After Haggerty at the Criterion Theatre, London.
