Joel Deering was a solicitor and fiancé of Dee-Dee Bailey who was murdered by his grooming victim Lauren Bolton in 2024.
Joel was separated from Emily Wilkinson when he met Dee-Dee while assigned as Lauren's duty solicitor in 2023. His marriage had ended when he cheated on Emily, leaving her pregnant with their daughter, Maeve. In 2024, Joel and Dee-Dee got engaged and moved in together at 15a Coronation Street, but they split up when Dee-Dee found out that Joel was behind Lauren's disappearance.
Beneath his charming exterior, Joel led a double life where he used his profession to target vulnerable young women. He first met Lauren when he got her off on a charge of criminal damage, and made her dependent on financial handouts from him which she repaid with sex. When Lauren rejected him, Joel attacked her, causing her to flee Weatherfield, pregnant with his child. Upon her return, Joel drugged Lauren to induce a miscarriage, but the child, Frankie Bolton, survived. He planned to flee the country when his crimes were exposed but Lauren bashed him on the head with a rock in order to save her friend Max Turner.
Biography[]
Joel was the third of Gus and Anthea Deering's four sons. He had a law degree from Leeds, where he studied in order to be near his then-girlfriend. Anthea believed that her son was selling himself short with his choice of university, and would blame the women in his life for holding him back over the years. The only one she seemed to approve of was his first wife, Emily Wilkinson. Marrying some time prior to 2023, Joel left Emily after she discovered his fling with another woman, absenting himself from the birth of their daughter, Maeve.
In 2023, Joel was working at Walcott's Solicitors. He used his job to indulge his predilection for young women, often charges of his who he would befriend and help financially as a prelude to abuse, both physical and sexual. Eventually, Walcott's found out about his predatory behaviour, but to avoid a scandal the matter was hushed up with Joel being given a severance package and his victim, Ellie Benton, being forced to sign an NDA. Joel was able to carry on his abuse at his next job at another law firm, and was working as duty solicitor at Weatherfield Police Station. In September 2023, he was assigned to troubled teenager Lauren Bolton, who had been arrested on a charge of criminal damage after trashing Audrey's salon in a fit of jealous rage. Joel managed to get Lauren off with a caution, and persuaded the young woman to accept a loan from him to pay the rent on her flat. It was through Lauren's case that Joel met Dee-Dee Bailey a rival solicitor from Barlow Legal Services. He was instantly attracted to her, and found various pretexts to meet in a professional capacity to see if she felt the same way. When she failed to take the bait, her employer Adam Barlow engineered a date between the two to chivvy them along.
Joel continued to give Lauren money, and in November, with her bills mounting, she accepted his offer to pay all her outstanding debts. It was a calculated move, relying on Lauren being too proud to accept a handout, and repaying him by selling her body. His gamble paid off, and the pair began a relationship where Joel would use Lauren for sex and reward her with expensive gifts, without anyone else knowing.
Dee-Dee's father Ed Bailey took an irrational dislike to Joel when they were introduced at the Viaduct Bistro. Ed, deep in his own troubles, resented the largesse of the successful young man and showed a lack of gratitude when Joel found an investor for a building development that Ed and his brother Ronnie were involved in. Joel was further embroiled in the Bailey family's problems when Ed won £6,000 on a horse in a rare win during a secretive gambling addiction. Dee-Dee's older brother Michael inadvertently came into possession of the cash and was questioned by the police about its origin. Finding out about Ed's addiction, Joel in confidence gave the police his betting slip showing them the source of the funds without giving away the builder's secret. Joel finally won Ed’s approval and was happy to go along with Dee-Dee’s suggestion that he join them for Christmas as Joel’s own parents would be away on a seasonal cruise.
A bump in Joel's relationship with Dee-Dee occurred towards the end of the year when Ed's gambling became common knowledge in the family and Joel had to confess that he already knew. Dee-Dee finished with Joel momentarily, but she quickly realised that she was overreacting and apologised to him. A more serious form of trouble reared its head the following February, when Emily tracked him down, keen to resolve unfinished business between them. As he hadn't even told Dee-Dee that he was married, Joel met with Emily in secret, but they were spotted by Dee-Dee's work colleague Alya Nazir who warned her friend that Joel appeared to be cheating on her. When Joel came clean about who Emily was, Dee-Dee was sickened that he had walked out on his pregnant wife and dumped him.
Joel's affair with Lauren had also run its course. Lauren called it off when she was accused of making up a "rich boyfriend" to impress people - humiliating her - and told Joel that either they would be together openly or not at all. Joel continued to harass Lauren, and hit her when she rebuked his advances, giving her a bruise on her shoulder. In a confrontation at her flat, Lauren threatened to tell all to Dee-Dee, causing Joel to see red and beat her senseless with a chair leg. Believing that she was dead, Joel ran from the flat, returning minutes later to check on the body only to find it missing; Lauren had survived and given him the slip. Due to the amount of blood in the flat, the police launched a murder investigation, and Lauren's employer Roy Cropper was falsely accused of killing her. Joel tried to find Lauren, but was unsuccessful as the terrified girl wouldn't even call her friends in Weatherfield to let them know she was alive.
Joel and Dee-Dee's paths crossed again two months later when Dee-Dee represented Roy who had been charged with murder. She was devastated when she failed to get Roy bail and Joel stepped into both comfort her and loudly take to task Carla Barlow when she blamed her for the cafe owner’s incarceration. The two resumed a no-strings friendship and Dee-Dee supported Joel when Emily offered to let him see Maeve as he confessed that he was terrified, not knowing how to be a dad. They grew closer and decided to give things another go.
In May 2024, Roy was released from Highfield Prison and Nathan Curtis arrested and charged with murder when one of Lauren's hairs was found in his van. Representing Nathan, Joel tried to persuade him to plead guilty, but this led Nathan to drop him in order to get a solicitor who would fight his case with more vigour. In order to see Nathan put away, Joel paid Ellie to tell a snooping Bethany Platt that Nathan had abused and threatened to kill her, and then ordered the frightened girl to disappear before the police could follow up on the lead.
In June, Joel introduced Dee-Dee to his parents, but Anthea looked down on her for working in a backstreet solicitor's office. Despite this unpromising start, Dee-Dee accepts Joel's proposal of marriage after some initial hesitation. There was more trouble when Anthea learned of the engagement, but she later apologised to Dee-Dee for overreacting and Joel was delighted when his parents welcomed his new fiancée. The following month, Adam agreed to move out of the shop flat in order that Joel could have his own room. A strict Christian, Dee-Dee had refused to sleep with Joel until they were married but eventually he wore her down and they had sex once.
Behind Dee-Dee's back, Joel tried to ensnare Sabrina Adetiba as his new victim. He was caught out by her friend Betsy trying to spike Sabrina's coffee with alcohol, and Betsy began to blackmail Joel. Joel offered Betsy money to keep out of his life. Betsy eventually showed threatening texts from Joel to her mother DS Lisa Swain, but Joel denied sending them.
Joel had an unexpected encounter with Lauren at Weatherfield General when she came out of hiding to visit Roy in hospital. Spotting Lauren there, he dragged the elusive girl into a family room where he discovered that she was pregnant with his child. Lauren managed to flee, but fortunately for Joel, Dee-Dee and Bethany were equally determined to trace her and located her at a squat in Warrington after finding evidence that she'd purchased a one-way ticket to the city. Lauren fainted while trying to escape from Joel when he turned up and she was taken to hospital for observation. Needing the charge against Nathan to stick, Joel bribed Lauren into implicating Nathan in return for him providing a roof over her head and, eventually, paying for her to move to Belfast. Joel delayed getting her plane tickets, citing financial problems due to his divorce from Emily, while also secretly obtaining - through Betsy - labour-inducing pills to get rid of the baby. In August, he put his plan into action by depriving an unwittingly Lauren of her flat keys and then feeding her soup containing the drug and locked her in her flat, bringing on a premature labour. However, Max Turner saved her and she was taken to hospital where she gave birth to a boy who she named Frankie.
Joel's divorce was soon finalised, and he and Dee-Dee began to look forward to their wedding. However, Dee-Dee was beginning to get suspicious of him, firstly when he spun her a yarn about why he'd booked a flight to Belfast, and later when she found that a woman had been staying in his flat which he claimed was a tenant. She guessed that the woman was Lauren, and comparing notes with the young girl, learned of their affair and the assault. The women worked out that Joel had deliberately trapped Lauren in her flat, and reported him to the police, but without firm evidence he wasn't charged. Nevertheless, Dee-Dee threw him out of her flat and ensured that he was suspended from work and denied access to Maeve. Joel continued to visit and taunt Lauren, and when she let herself be goaded into attacking him, he applied for custody of Frankie on the basis that Lauren had procured the labour-inducing drugs herself in order to abort him. He also issued Carla with a slander writ when she saw him with a woman at the Chariot Square and announced his crimes to the room. He was finally charged with administering a noxious substance with intent to cause harm when Betsy confessed to buying the drugs on Joel's orders, coupled with a statement from Ellie about the abuse she'd suffered at his hands.
Released on bail, Joel attempted to patch things up with Dee-Dee. On what would have been their wedding day, he missed his plea hearing and turned up at the cafe, putting on a show of being drunk and contrite and terrifying Roy in the process. That night, he left his flat with his suitcase in hand, intending to go on the run, but was caught by Dee-Dee. In the heat of the moment, Dee-Dee whacked Joel with a crowbar and ran off. Joel made his getaway in his car, wounded but alive. However, his movements were relayed to Lauren through a tracker app Dee-Dee had secretly installed on his phone weeks earlier, and seeing the alert, Max set off to deal with Joel once and for all. In a confrontation on a bridge, Joel easily overpowered Max and held him by the neck. Lauren, arriving on the scene just in time, saved her friend by grabbing a rock and hitting Joel over the head, killing him.
Max and Lauren tipped Joel's body into the river, where it was found a few days later. The police determined that he was murdered and an investigation led by DS Kit Green didn't turn up any solid leads until November when, to protect Lauren, Max handed himself in, claiming that he killed Joel in self-defence. He was charged with murder, but released when Lauren confessed the truth under pressure. She is awaiting trial.
Two months after Joel's death, Dee-Dee found out that she was pregnant with his child.
Personality[]
Joel exhibits traits of anti-social personality disorder, psychopathy in particular. He manipulates everyone around him to make himself look good. In spite of the fact he's calculated and strategic, Joel can be impulsive. This is seen when he lashed out at Lauren Bolton because he couldn't stand the fact she said Dee-Dee Bailey's name. He also snapped impulsively at Betsy Swain. Joel's charming appearance is simply a facade - in reality he's a psychopath with moments of terrible anger and is incredibly selfish. He also lacks empathy.
