Joe Gladwin (born 22nd January 1906 in Salford, died 11th March 1987 in Manchester) appeared on Coronation Street intermittently between February 1961 and February 1966 as Fred Jackson, owner of Jackson's Chip Shop.
He also appeared in the January Sale episode of the Street spin-off Pardon the Expression, transmitted in January 1966.
Best known for his long-running situation comedy roles as Stan Hardman in Nearest and Dearest from 1968 to 1973, and as Wally Batty in Last of the Summer Wine between 1975 and 1986, his other numerous credits include Club Night, Here's Harry, Z Cars, Gideon's Way, Dixon of Dock Green, The Villains, Mary Barton, City '68, The Prisoner, The Liver Birds, Budgie, Crown Court, How's Your Father?, The Sweeney, The Wackers, The Onedin Line, All Creatures Great and Small, Juliet Bravo and Tales of the Unexpected.
Film roles include A Kind of Loving, Night Must Fall, Three Hats for Lisa, Charlie Bubbles, Work is a 4-Letter Word, The Reckoning, The Mind of Mr. Soames, Nearest and Dearest, Escape from the Dark and Yanks.
