Joe Armstrong was councillor of Weatherfield's St. Mary's Ward, winning his seat in November 1962 at a by-election triggered by the death of sitting councillor Woodstock. Armstrong's campaign poster bore the slogan "Vote Armstrong - For a Square Deal". Accruing 1,642 votes against Mellor's 1,463 and Leonard Swindley's 405, Armstrong's victory came as no surprise to the residents of Coronation Street, including Albert Tatlock who was among his supporters.
