Jimmi Harkishin was born on 19th March 1965 in Paris to an Indian father and an Italian mother and first acted under his real name of James Harkishin, making both his film and television debut in 1987. He made appearances in many programmes such as Casualty, Desmond's, Medics and Jonathan Creek before making his debut as Dev Alahan in Coronation Street in Episode 4714 on 10th November 1999.

He has two children by his partner Susan Beaton but his private life took a turn for the worse when he was arrested on 7th November 2004 for attempting to change the price tag of an item he was trying to buy in a shop and a couple of weeks later was pictured in The News of the World using cocaine. Granada supported him by giving him unspecified time off work in his successful attempt to overcome his addiction. In the event this period only lasted for a few weeks at the beginning of the year.
