Jim Baker was a customer at The Flying Horse who one night in January 1963 frequented the Rovers Return with his fellow drinkers to take part in a pub darts match between the two hostelries.

Harry Hewitt was off form that night, depressed about his bus-conducting job and fellow Rovers team-mate Len Fairclough was no better. Jim enjoyed gently riling Len and also admired Sheila Birtles and Doreen Lostock when he saw them stood at the bar, saying to the flattered women that he'd be pleased to see them in the Flying Horse sometime.

With the match almost over, Jim told Jack Walker that his two key players were doing badly and with the scores as they were it was almost too late to do anything about it.

Jim was played by Derek Benfield who in 1967 returned to the programme as Dot Greenhalgh's cuckolded husband Walter.
