Jill Kerman ( born 4th July 1946 in Mill Hill, London) appeared on Coronation Street intermittently between May 1982 and August 1994 as florist Maggie Dunlop/Redman, mother of Mike Baldwin's son, Mark Redman.
Educated at Copthall School, she enrolled at RADA and graduated three years later. She then moved to Coventry where she worked in repertory theatre before making her West End debut in Spring and Port Wine, alongside actor John Alderton.
On television, she is best remembered for her long running role as Penny Wheeler, fiancée of teacher Bernard Hedges in the comedy series Please Sir, which ran from 1968 through until 1971 when the series turned into sequel The Fenn Street Gang, and also appeared in the feature film of the series. Other television roles followed in Softly Softly: Task Force, Crown Court, The Cuckoo Waltz, The Other One, Strangers, Rep, Now and Then and Fairly Secret Army.
