Jeremy Bremner was a man who lost a civil court case in a boundary dispute where Adam Barlow was the solicitor who represented the successful party. Soon afterwards, Adam's car was keyed and he reported the matter to the police who discovered that it was Bremner behind the attack and duly dealt with him. In the interim, Adam had falsely accused Lydia Chambers of being behind the vandalism. She was an old girlfriend from his days at Edinburgh University where he regarded her as just another in a long line of conquests, whereas she fell passionately in love with him and was devastated when he dumped her after she fell pregnant. Meeting up many years later, she and Adam rowed when he denied all knowledge of ever knowing her.
When Adam continued to be the target of further harassment, he assumed Bremner was again the culprit and after his car windscreen was smashed set off to confront the man at his lock-up. While Bremner admitted to the keying incident, he denied any other acts imputed to him. Adam stated that he wouldn't be intimidated by Bremner but had to backtrack quickly when two of Bremner's heavies stepped forward showing that they meant business. Promising Bremner that he hadn't heard the end of the matter, Adam left the premises.
Adam reported Bremner to the police but he had alibis for each of the interim occurences, but not for a further series of threats, one of which was written and left in Adam's flat. Bremner was duly arrested and denied bail, making Adam and wife Sarah feel a lot safer. However the incidents continued to happen, which were in fact orchestrated by Lydia while Bremner languished in his cell.
