Jeanette was a social worker assigned to the case of Summer Spellman in 2017. Summer's father, Drew, had died of cancer earlier that year and she was then involved in a tug of war between her grandparents and Drew’s choice of guardian, his old boyfriend Billy Mayhew. Summer’s entry into Billy's life was not without hassle, but she dealt with the grief of losing her father and trying to find acceptance in her new life in Weatherfield. This involved smoking a strange looking discarded cigarette which had been found by Simon Barlow and turned out to be Spice. Billy blamed Simon when Summer was hospitalised and punched Peter Barlow when he defended his son. The school reported the matter of Summer’s overdose to social services as a matter of procedure and Jeanette visited her flat after the girl’s release from hospital. There she found the girl was being visited by her friends, Asha and Aadi Alahan together with Simon, who was still simmering over the treatment meted out to his father. He couldn't contain himself and told Summer and Jeanette about the assault, branding Billy a hypocrite.
An angry Jeannete questioned Billy and his partner Todd Grimshaw separately, where Billy admitted to the infraction, though he assured her that he had never been a violent man before. Jeanette had to tell the two men that it raised serious concerns about the prospects of Billy and Todd formally adopting Summer. Peter found out about his son’s outburst and went round to the flat, keen to avoid creating a situation which would lead to Summer either going into care or being returned to her grandparents. Without any prompting from Billy, he told Jeanette that his own attitude had inflamed the situation and he had pushed the vicar too far. He reiterated that no child had been in danger during the row and that Billy was as safe as houses. He also confirmed that he would not be pressing any charges and departed, leaving behind a visibly impressed Jeanette. After conferring with her boss Graham, Jeanette reported that Summer could stay with Billy and Todd for the time being, but they would be subject to more regular checks to monitor progress.
In line with his religious principles, Billy handed himself in to the police for assault. As a routine, his fingerprints were taken and these matched those found on car involved in a robbery committed back in 2001, where the getaway car hit another one, possibly killing the woman inside it. Adam Barlow prepared a statement for Billy denying any involvement in the robbery and he was released without charge. Summer walked into the flat while Jeanette was making one of her regular visits and misunderstood the situation, thinking she was there as a result of Billy's arrest and blurted out about the matter. Billy and Todd tried to cover quickly, saying that the matter was a daft mistake which they were still trying to sort out. Jeanette accepted the explanation and left, to the relief of all the flat’s occupants.
