Jean Berry was an applicant for the position of sales assistant at Gamma Garments in 1965.
The well-to-do Mrs Allen chatted to fellow candidate Elsie Tanner as they waited for their interviews at the Morton Towers Hotel, managing to rub her rival up the wrong way with her superior, boastful attitude. Her choice comments included that she only worked for something to do, that she was looking to leave her well-paid job as a buyer at Megsons as it was taking up too much of her time, and that the money would be helpful to pay the petrol bills and let her have her hair done.
Having managed to bite her tongue, Elsie was dismayed when Miss Berry and the interviewer, Mr Soames, greeted each other by their first names, revealing that they were well acquainted. Fully expecting to lose out to Jean - especially after hearing Mr Soames name a date - Elsie was shocked when the interviewer told her that the job was hers, and the arrangement she'd overheard was purely social.
- Credited as "Miss Berry", the character's first name was given in dialogue.
