James Vaughan appeared on Coronation Street between September and December 1989 as Det. Sgt. Crichton, investigating Alan Bradley's reign of terror on Rita Fairclough.

He graduated from the Drama Centre London in 1981.

On stage, he appeared in productions of Hamlet, The Gingerbread Man, One Touch of Venus, Du Barry Was a Lady, Carnival!, Bloomer Girl, Of Thee I Sing, Panama Hattie, Flahooley, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, I'd Rather Be Right and Can-Can.

While for radio, he was heard in The Change, No Commitments: Soap Bubbles, Smelling of Roses and Absolute Power.
