Sir Humphrey Swinton was a wealthy man from the 1800s.

Humphrey's family wielded considerable wealth and power in Manchester, and he himself was a landowner who planned the construction of Mawdsley and Albert Street (later named Coronation Street. Towards the end of his life Humphrey began an affair with Mabel Grimshaw to escape from his loveless marriage to Helen Swinton, and set her up in a house in Oakhill. Following Helen's death as well as his own, from a heart attack in 1900, Mabel inherited Humphrey's wealth and saw his plans for Mawdsley and Albert Street to completion.
