Hugo Crowhurst was a friend of Henry Newton who was involved in a bet to stay in a relationship with someone who they believed was unattractive.

Although Henry pretended to be interested in Gemma Winter, he was actually using her as an attempt to win his bet with Hugo. Despite his bet, Henry rejected going to meet Hugo on the night of his birthday in order to attend a party with Gemma in the Rovers.

Hugo and his girlfriend Carly Kirkby later met up with Henry and Gemma for a double date at Nick's Bistro. Gemma was shocked at Hugo's girlfriend and remarked to Henry that she thought Carly was rough. Hugo was impressed by Henry's choice of Gemma for their bet and mocked her, saying that she would make a terrific "Mrs Newton".

Gemma found Hugo's sarcastic comments during their meal rude and told Henry that he should teach his mate some manners. Hugo warned Henry about Gemma's fiery nature and told him that she would help him win their £5,000 bet. Gemma's friend Chesney Brown overheard Hugo's boasts and decided to tell her and Carly that they were the victims of the cruel bet.

Hugo continued to make loud and cruel remarks about the two girls despite Henry's protests that he should keep his voice down. Henry told Hugo to apologise or he would punch him, leading Hugo to find out that Henry had fallen in love with Gemma. Despite his change of heart, Gemma broke up with Henry and told him and Hugo that their bet was off.
