Gus Radcliffe was an old friend of Ken Barlow's and was a lecturer on the MA course for literature, culture and modernity that his son, Daniel Osbourne, wanted to study. Wanting to give Daniel every advantage, Ken arranged to meet Gus in the Rovers where he could chat to Daniel about the course. Gus arrived on time and accepted a pint from Ken, asking him about his recent stroke and telling him that he had another twenty years in him yet. As the time wore on, Daniel failed to arrive, busy entitled in problems in his love life with Sinead Tinker whose soon-to-be ex-boyfriend Chesney Brown was in the act of throwing her out of 5 Coronation Street. Ken rang Daniel on his mobile but failed to get an answer as he was busily making Sinead comfortable in his corner shop flat. As it neared 7.00pm and another appointment, Gus couldn't wait any longer and had to leave to profuse apologies from Ken who later angrily confronted Daniel for failing to give his future prospects 100%.
