Gregory Stephens was the son of Anthony and Isabel Stephens and brother of Amanda.
By 2000 Gregory's mother had been placed into Rose Gardens Nursing Home, jointly paid for by his father and uncle George Docherty, after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Becoming lonely, Anthony began an extra-marital affair with Rita Sullivan much to the disapproval of George who revealed that he would be stopping his payment towards Isabel's care unless the relationship finished. Anthony continued seeing Rita and decided to find a way to pay for his wife's care himself by selling his home. In February 2001, Gregory along with his sister and uncle once again voiced their disgust at Anthony's actions but they were all left stunned when he revealed his decision to file for divorce to continue his relationship with Rita.
