Grease is a 1971 romantic comedy-drama musical about two lovers in the fifties, later spawning a popular film version in 1978 starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.
In Coronation Street, Alf Roberts was convinced in October 1996 that his seventieth birthday present from wife Audrey was tickets to see Grease, even dressing up in his teddy boy suit for the occasion. In reality, Alf had a three-day stay at a health farm to look forward to instead.
The Weatherfield Comprehensive school staged a production of Grease in spring 2000, overseen by headteacher Mrs Paton. Among the many pupils getting involved were Sarah Louise Platt and Candice Stowe. Sarah's role of stage manager was due to the fact the 13-year-old was several months pregnant and unable to assume an onstage role, to her intense disappointment. Hayley Cropper, who worked at local knicker factory Underworld, also helped out by assisting Sarah in creating costumes.
Four years later in March 2004, young Rosie Webster starred in stage school manager Nicole Farnsworth's production, to the delight of her mother Sally, although the girl had to battle a severe case of nerves before she was able to perform. The problems didn't end there as, the morning after Ken Barlow was present to review the show for the Weatherfield Gazette, Sally was enraged to find her daughter's name had been misspelt in the paper as "Dozi Webster"!
