The Golden Heart Awards are an annual awards ceremony held in Weatherfield, celebrating the successes of residents for a variety of reasons. The awards are organised by the Weatherfield Gazette.
Aggie Bailey was nominated for a Golden Heart Award in January 2020, for trying to save Robert Preston's life in the Christmas Day shooting rampage by Derek Milligan. Aggie was highly reluctant to get involved in any publicity when Suki Waters, a freelance journalist for the Gazette asked her for an interview and was annoyed to find out that her son James had alerted the press.
She reluctantly acquiesced and allowed Suki to question her at No.3, playing down her contribution as she had previously left the nursing profession after one of her patients died when under her care and she felt compelled to resign through guilt, even though she had committed no wrong-doing. She also took a series of photographs of Aggie at work at Roy's Rolls to accompany the article.
Aggie won the award, which was celebrated at a lavish ceremony at the Chariot Square Hotel hosted by Billy Mayhew. Aggie was presented with a trophy by County star player Tommy Orpington.
In April of the following year, Brian Packham took a call claiming that Rita Tanner had been nominated for a Golden Heart Award. As the caller referred to her as "Rita Sullivan", he assumed it was a hoax, cooked up by one of the trolls plaguing him and girlfriend Cathy Matthews. It later transpired that Sharon Bentley had nominated Rita for the award, citing her services to fostering in the 1980s. During the virtual ceremony at the end of the month, Rita missed out on the award.
