Glenda Shuttleworth is the daughter of undertaker Archie Shuttleworth and sister of George. A former cabaret singer on the cruise ships, Glenda returned to dry land in 2022 and got a job as a barmaid at the Rovers Return.

In 2023, Glenda purchased the Weatherfield franchise of Little Big Shotz, a children's stage school, from her old showbiz friend Estelle Harrington, and runs it at the Victoria Street Community Centre alongside her work at the pub.

Biography[]

Glenda was the daughter of Archie Shuttleworth, director of Shuttleworth's Independent Funeral Services.

As a child, Glenda released her pet terrapin into a sewer so that it could become a ninja turtle at the suggestion of her older brother, George. When Archie found out that she'd lost the family pet, Glenda took the blame rather than admit that George had played a cruel joke on her.

George was protective of Glenda to the point of interfering. When at thirteen she pretended to be older in order go out with sixteen-year-old Barry Offerton, a disapproving George told Barry her true age, causing him to stand her up.

Glenda resented the preferential treatment Archie gave George, including grooming him to one day take over the funeral parlour. As an adult, with no place for her in the family business, she pursued a career as a singer on the cruise ships. When Archie passed away in 2018, George got Archie's house - 2 Conifer Avenue - and business, while Glenda had to make do with a bit of cash, a dining table and three chairs.

In 2022, after a fight with her sous chef boyfriend, Glenda turned up in Weatherfield to reconnect with George. At the time of her arrival, her brother was out of action after accidentally taking tramadol to help ease his toothache, and Glenda assisted his deputy Todd Grimshaw in organising the funeral of family friend Mr Pugh, effortlessly resolving a dispute over burying the deceased with his prized trombone.

Glenda moved into lodgings, but could more often be found at 11 Coronation Street, the home of George's partner Eileen Grimshaw and lodgers Todd, Mary Taylor and Sean Tully, with whom Glenda became fast friends, helping set the latter up with dentist Laurence Reeves. She lied about her experience in bar work in order to get a job at the Rovers Return, but gave the game away when poured a dreadful pint. Nevertheless, landlady Jenny Connor agreed to take her on when barmaid Gemma Winter offered to train her. Quickly winning over the punters with her effervescent personality and tall tales about her life at sea, she proved her worth when she manhandled a drunk customer out of the pub, and later when she made the Rovers' quiz night a storming success while Jenny was laid up with a sprained ankle.

In November, when Daisy Midgeley gave up her room at the pub, Glenda snapped it up in order to get out from under George's feet. Yearning for a return to the entertainment world, she pushed for Daisy to book her as her wedding singer when she married Daniel Osbourne, but Daisy wasn't convinced by her talent. Her chance came when her old friend Estelle Harrington visited the area, now the co-owner of a string of performing arts clubs for kids called Little Big Shotz. George lent Glenda £5,000 to buy the Weatherfield franchise, and she set up the school at the Victoria Street Community Centre, while keeping on her job at the Rovers. Glenda trained up the local children and in August 2023 they put on a Summer Spectacular at the Viaduct Bistro.

That same month, Jenny told her staff that the Rovers would have to close as it was no longer profitable. In a bid to save her job and home, Glenda helped plan a party night designed to interest brewery Newton & Ridley in purchasing the pub. Originally, Glenda was meant to sing but when she lost her voice, she booked ageing singer Glyn Young to do the job. At the party, Philip Newton lavished salacious attention upon Glenda but stalked out when she labelled him a "dirty old perv" to Glyn, not realising that Glyn's microphone was still turned on and their conversation had been heard through the speakers in the bar. The brewery ultimately did buy the Rovers, but it was then closed down when LS Waterford purchased Newton & Ridley itself, and laid off the entire staff. George took Glenda in at his home in Conifer Avenue. Four months later, Jenny bought back the Rovers and got the team back together for a 31st December re-opening, and in January Glenda moved back in.

In March, Glenda was left to hold the fort at the pub during a speed-dating night. After locking up, Glenda was assaulted by two men to broke in for the takings, and her confidence took a knock as a result.

The following month, Estelle decided to divest herself of Little Big Shotz and offered the business to Glenda. Although her own franchise was bleeding money, Glenda was keen to buy and commit herself to the club. When Todd Grimshaw accidentally tipped off Glenda about a previously-undiscovered will from Archie which left her half of the family business, Glenda requested a payout from George in return for not pressing her claim on the undertakers. George paid her off to the sum of £22,000, however with Estelle deciding not to sell Little Big Shotz after all, Glenda decided to use the money to sue her brother for more. Glenda felt momentarily guilty when she found out that George was now contributing towards Jason Grimshaw's medical bills but went ahead anyway, demanding half his house as well. She and Michael Bailey became an item when he supported her, but Michael disapproved of the ruthless actions she was taking and finished with her when she changed the locks on George's house and dumped his belongings at No.11. The siblings managed to resolve their dispute amicably when Glenda accepted George's offer to keep the house if she left the business to him.
