Ginnie Waters was a senior manager at Bettabuy when Curly Watts was interviewed for the position of the manager of the Weatherfield store in July 1993, recently vacated when Reg Holdsworth was promoted to area manager. There were several internal candidates up for the role including trainee Elaine Fenwick who would all have to go before a panel interview headed by Ginnie and aided by Reg himself and their colleague Cyril Wilkinson. Curly's hopes that the job was his for the taking suffered a setback when the panel arrived at the store and Ginnie said that Elaine’s name was known favourably at head office and, to make matters worse, she also knew Elaine's parents socially.

On the trip up there, it had became clear to Reg that Elaine was Ginnie's preferred candidate and he had seen her trying to persuade Cyril even before the interview began to come round to her way of thinking. He therefore chose the dangerous tactic of putting Curly under pressure in the interview in order that he could show Cyril what he was made of. Reggie asked a difficult question centred around the fact that the Weatherfield store was the only one in the company that had no direct local competition and he asked Cury what detailed tactics he would use should such a rival open. Not understanding what his old manager was up to, Curly was livid when he met Reg in the Rovers afterwards and only calmed down when the situation was explained to him.

The tactic worked and Curly was successful in getting the role however his delight was tempered by the news that a disgruntled Elaine was appointed permanently to be his assistant.
