Gerry Northrop was a Tai Chi instructor who struck up a friendship with Elaine Jones in 2023.
In July 2023, Gerry approached Elaine and her partner Stephen Reid to inform them that his Tai Chi lessons were being made permanent due to high demand. As Stephen was uninterested in attending, Elaine went alone and joined Gerry for a Mojito afterwards. When Elaine attended her daughter-in-law Sally Metcalfe's meal at the Viaduct Bistro she bumped into Gerry once again and Sally offered for him to join them much to Stephen's annoyance. The group were intrigued to listen to Gerry recounting some of his Tai Chi experience, except for Stephen who struggled to maintain his annoyance. Later, Elaine was left shocked when she caught Stephen pulling faces at her while she was singing Gerry's praises.
Elaine attended another Tai Chi lesson with Sally, Tim, Steve McDonald and Ed Bailey and was left humiliated when Steve passed wind but Gerry reassured her that it was a natural occurrence. The group arranged for a meal but eventually only Gerry, Elaine and Ed were able to attend. Ed made his excuses and left not wanting to be a third wheel. Riddled with jealousy, Stephen stalked Elaine and watched as she and Gerry headed off for the meal together.
