George Docherty was the brother of Isabel Docherty.
In November 2000, George made the discovery that his sister's husband, Anthony Stephens, had become romantically involved with another woman, Rita Sullivan, while Isabel resided at Rose Gardens Nursing Home suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Furious, George announced that he would no longer be putting money towards Isabel's care, the cost of which was currently being shared by George and Anthony, if Anthony and Rita's relationship continued. Not wanting to give Rita up, Anthony decided that he would sell his house to get the money in order to not lose Rita but Rita asked him to keep her out of any decision he made about his wife.
It turned out that Anthony and Isabel's daughter, Amanda, was the one who contacted George to tell him about Rita. In February 2001, Amanda meddled further as she invited George and her brother Gregory to the dinner party arranged by Anthony to apologise for the way he has treated Isabel. The trio ganged up on Anthony but he put a stop to their arguments when he claimed loneliness as the cause for his actions and admitted he would be filing for divorce against Isabel.
