George Betton (born "William George Betton" on 8th March 1896 in Kirkdale, Liverpool; died 4th June 1969 in Twickenham) appeared on Coronation Street in two roles: firstly in July 1963 as the caretaker of Armstrong's Rehearsal Rooms; and he returned to the programme between May 1966 and May 1968 in the more established role of Wally Tanner, father-in-law of Elsie.
He appeared in an episode of the Street spin-off comedy Pardon the Expression in between these roles.
He left school at 15, saw action in World War I in the King's African Rifles in German East Africa and became an actor after he was demobbed in 1920.
His other credits include Dixon of Dock Green, Maigret, No Hiding Place, Compact, Z Cars, Emergency-Ward 10, Honey Lane and Harry Worth.
