George Alphonsus Cooper (born 7th March 1925 in Leeds, died 16th November 2018 in Liss, Hampshire) appeared on Coronation Street intermittently between December 1964 and November 1971 as butcher-turned-businessman Willie Piggott.
He also appeared in The Annual Stocktaking, an episode of the programme's spin-off Pardon the Expression, transmitted in February 1966.
Best known for his long-running role as grumpy school caretaker Mr Griffiths in Grange Hill, his other credits include roles in Doctor Who, Z Cars, The Avengers, The New Avengers, The Saint, Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased), Steptoe and Son, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and Billy Liar.
On stage, he appeared in productions of The Threepenny Opera and Billy Liar.
