Geoff was a manager of the Weatherfield branch of the Denaro Nationwide Bank who saw Yasmeen Metcalfe and her granddaughter Alya Nazir one day in February 2021 about a series of personal loans. These had been taken out by Yasmeen's deceased husband, Geoff during a nightmare period for her when he had been subjecting her to months of coercive control, subjugating her will and reducing her ability to say no to his demands. She had therefore signed the loan agreements without the ability to exercise any rational judgement as to the consequences of her actions. In the intervening two months after his death, she had stuck her head in the sand when it came to the red reminders and court summons, hiding the letters in a box which Alya had just come across. In addition, they had just received a visit from a court bailiff and his colleague to enforce an order for non-payment.
Geoff was sympathetic towards Yasmeen but pointed out that as she had signed the agreement, she had no option but to pay back the sum owed. He argued against Alya's protestations regarding the coercive control, saying that nothing had been formally proven about that and therefore the claim couldn't be taken into account. Yasmeen's mental health was in a precarious place and as she looked at the manager's name badge, she had one of several visions that her deceased husband was sat in the manager's chair, berating her for her deficiencies. Unable to deal with the occurrence, Yasmeen fled the office.
