The green man

The Green Man in 1965

The Green Man was a Blackburn pub.

In 1965, Willie Piggott brought Len Fairclough to the Green Man to discuss a job converting six local houses into flats. Piggott had offered Len the plumbing contract and brought him to the town to see the houses for himself. Despite being there for work reasons, the men barely discussed the conversion as Piggott was more interested in flirting with the barmaid, Rosie, who was well acquainted with the Weatherfield butcher.

Len paid a second visit to the Green Man a few days later, this time by himself, while trying to decide whether to work for Piggott. As he would have to live in digs for the duration of the job, Len went into the pub to meet some of the drinkers at his temporary local. However, his attempts to engage the punters in conversation fell on deaf ears and the barmaid neglected him in favour of their regular customers, leaving Len with such a bad impression of the place that he turned down Piggott's work opportunity.

Fittingly, the Green Men had a sign on the wall at the bar reading "There's nowhere as friendly as your local". It contained at least two seating areas and played jaunty music in the public.
