Exeter is a city in Devon, England, on the River Exe 36 miles northeast of Plymouth and 65 miles southwest of Bristol. A Roman city, in the late 19th century, Exeter became an affluent centre for the wool trade but is now dependent on tourism.

When Vera Duckworth tried to trace her missing grandson Paul Clayton in January 1992, private investigator Gordon Hastings lied to her that his family had moved to Exeter from Edinburgh as part of their flitting about different parts of the United Kingdom. Jack Duckworth revealed Hastings' lies, knowing that the family were in fact in Heaton Norris, Stockport, and wanted nothing to do with the Duckworths.
