Eric Priestley was the owner of a DIY shop who bought enough advertising space in Ken Barlow's Weatherfield Recorder freesheet to merit him an article written by Ken. With the death of Albert Tatlock having taken place the previous year, Ken and Deirdre had decorated 1 Coronation Street, selling off the large antique sideboard that had been in the house for many years in the process. Ken was taken with having a modern sideboard unit in its place and on a visit to the office, Eric promised to give Ken the pieces at trade price and lend him the tools to complete the job himself.
Eric made a return visit to the office to see how his advert was progressing and to make some additions to it for some compost and peat that he had recently taken stock of. Trainee reporter Sally Waterman showed him the proposed layout which had no room for anything else and Eric was mollified to hear that any free space would be taken up with Ken's article on him. Ken admitted that Deirdre had strong reservations about Ken's DIY skills and told him to contact him if he ran into any problems.
- The character was also credited in Episode 2495 (27th February 1985) but did not appear.
