Plot[]

Part One: A contented Annie flies back from Majorca with Douglas Cresswell of Newton & Ridley. Back at the Rovers, Jack rages how someone can break up a thirty-year old marriage. Ken returns from Glasgow, having left Val and the twins up there for a while. He advises Len to phone Elsie. He does so and hears from Sheila that Elsie has left but she doesn't know where she's gone. Ena refuses Ernie's request that he photographs her. Elsie returns to the street and hears from Ken that Len thinks she has a fella. Hilda is put out to hear that Betty knew of Elsie's return before she did. Ray delays telling Len about the possible brewery deal, wanting to keep it for himself. To stop Hilda annoying Jack with tactless remarks, Ena and Emily tell her that Annie has a fancy man, but to keep it quiet. Lucille tells Len that Elsie is back. Jack goes to the airport as the plane descends into Manchester.

Part Two: Annie's plane lands. Elsie makes it clear to Lucille that she's not interested in speaking to Len. Jack is off with Douglas when he meets him and Annie in the airport's cocktail bar. Douglas leaves them alone and Annie tells Jack that she gave a letter to Ena to pass on, which states that she was staying on to help at the brewery's hotel when they had a sudden influx of Americans. Jack realises Ena's got it badly wrong. Len angers Elsie when he says she'll come running for him when her latest fella lets her down. Annie returns to the Rovers and isn't pleased to see Betty behind the bar. Jack hears that Douglas wants them to go and live in Majorca running a new pub aimed at British tourists. They have two weeks to decide. She is furious with Ena and Emily but decides to play along with their misconception. Jack tells all the women except Ena, Emily and Hilda the truth, asking them to join in the deception. Len tries to sell his van to raise the money to pay Elsie off her £300. Just before Lucille can come clean with him about what Ray is planning, Len takes a message for him telling him about the brewery deal. He's delighted at the supposed upturn for the yard.

Notes[]

  • Two different shots of stock footage were used of a BAE aircraft in flight though the interior of the plane was accomplished in the studio. This becomes obvious in the third scene set in the plane when the camera tracks down the gangway, showing the edge of the scenery outside the windows.
  • The scenes set inside Ringway Airport's terminal building and out on the apron were filmed on location in the longest shoot at the facility since the programme began. The scene in the cocktail bar was recorded in the studio.
  • TV Times synopsis: Annie returns and Jack faces the truth.
  • Viewing Figures: First UK broadcast - 5,800,000 homes (7th place).
