Plot[]
Part One: Elsie and Maggie suffer upset stomachs from the Hilda’s cooking and Stan’s punch. Minnie has received another postcard from Ena saying that she’s stood on a sea urchin. Val refuses to let Edith take Peter and Susan to Belle Vue on her own. Her mother’s presence is beginning to get on her nerves. Dickie gets a job on a building site, labouring for £14 a week. Audrey makes plans to return some of the HP items to economise. Finding out about Dickie’s new employment, an annoyed Elsie tells him he ought to beg for his old job back on his knees. Stan’s stomach also suffers from Hilda’s food. Val gives in and allows her mother to take the twins out. Audrey pushes Dickie to take up Elsie’s suggestion and ring his office. Len gets annoyed at Ray’s demands about the £50 owing to the bank. Mr Loveday, Dickie’s old boss, calls at No.3. He tells Audrey he’s received no phone call from Dickie and he'd have her husband back like a shot, even though he’s got a lot to learn about life. Jack tells Len he ought to learn to live within his means.
Part Two: Dickie is cynical about the reasons why Loveday wants him back. Maggie expects a visit from her sister, Betty Turpin. Hilda is touched when Val tells her she enjoyed her party. Loveday agrees to a fresh start for Dickie, beginning tomorrow. A bored Val calls in at the corner shop, telling Maggie that her mother’s interfering behaviour annoys her. Maggie admits that her sister has the same effect on her. Ray admits to Jack that times are tough at the yard. At 6.30pm, Ken and Val eat a meal alone, awaiting Edith’s late return. Elsie is put out when Len is off with her. She and Jack wonder how deep in he is with his money problems. Edith rings the Barlows to say the twins have gone missing at Belle Vue.
