Plot[]
Part One: Jack has received a postcard from Annie in Majorca. Ena’s postcard to Minnie hints that she prefers Morecambe, but a Spanish phrase written as a P.S. puzzles her friend. At a loose end, Elsie can’t find anyone to spend the bank holiday with her. With their hire purchase debt of £250, Dickie decides to brave the arcade and fix the machines for Eddie Goulden. Audrey translates the phrase as “Milk Stout, thank you”. Despite Val’s grumpy objections, Ken plans a day out for the bank holiday. Edith isn’t happy that Maggie is joining them and is bitchy towards her about Les. Maggie cries off and Val realises her mother is the cause. Stan and Hilda plan a bank holiday bring-a-bottle barbecue party for that evening. Ray tells an unconcerned Len that they’re £50 above their overdraft limit. Emily whispers to Ray that Len is drawing more money than usual on expenses. Elsie sees that Audrey is scared about Dickie and she and Ray decide to do something about it. The Barlows can’t decide where to go for their outing. Edith is put out when they accept the Ogdens' party invitation. Val is amused at her mother’s put-out reaction.
Part Two: Elsie persuades Dickie to stick firm with the promise of Ray as a heavy. Ken promises to find a babysitter for the party, but Val still objects to all his ideas for where to go during the day. Ray refuses Hilda’s grudging invitation to the party but warns Stan to be on time for work tomorrow. As Dickie’s workday nears its end, Audrey is on edge. As the Barlows arrive for the party, a sudden downpour drenches Stan’s barbecue coals. Ray and Dickie anger Audrey when they pretend to have been roughed up when in reality Goulden didn’t put in an appearance. The party guests dislike Hilda’s shish kebabs made with corned beef. Bill Blakeley calls at No.3 to give Dickie the sack because he's heard he’s an easy touch and he doesn’t like get warnings a from a councillor.
