Plot[]
Part One: Ray is surprised when he finds Stan preparing for work early in the yard, but the answer becomes clear when Hilda comes running in for her missing housekeeping and finds out that her husband is failing to meet his quota. Hilda insists he cleans forty houses a day. Ken wants Val to have a private operation on her knee even though it will cost over £200. Ray makes it clear to Lucille that she was wrong to tell Audrey about Dickie's job. Meanwhile, Audrey asks Dickie about his work and is unhappy when she doesn't get the truth out of him. She breaks down in front of Minnie. Stan's increased work tempo surprises everyone. Still upset about the clog dancers, Annie ignores a businessman who walks out. She panics when Jack says he might have been one of the "Perfect Landlady" judges. Minnie confronts Lucille for upsetting Audrey. Ashamed, she asks Elsie to call on Audrey who decides to confront her husband at the arcade. Elsie decides to go with her.
Part Two: Ena tells Val that going private is betraying her principles. Audrey runs out of the arcade in tears when she sees Dickie working there. Hilda doesn't believe Stan is working hard and thinks he's up to something. Ray tells Ena that the customer in the Rovers has given him an idea which will prove a cushy number. Ken sells his car to pay for the operation. Val isn't pleased. Returning home, Dickie tells Audrey he's tired of always being short of money and hands over the £25 he's earned. Stan's earnings are only 3/- after Ray's taken off the various sums he lent him. Ray tells Ken he recognised the Rovers' customer as a man who works for the gas board. Maggie tells Ken that Val's real concern is how he will cope with the twins which gives him an idea. Audrey admits to Elsie that she knows Dickie did what he did for her. Having rung Glasgow from the Rovers, Ken breaks the news to Val that her mother, Edith Tatlock, is coming to stay over the operation period. She isn't at all pleased.
