Plot[]
Part One: Alice temps as the Rovers' cleaner while Hilda is ill with flu. Annie is surprised to hear from her that Effie has gone to live with her niece without saying goodbye to anyone. Elsie remains worried about the mysterious man. Len tries to play it down, annoying her. Val pushes her into getting Len to put a bolt on the door but Elsie rejects his suggestion that he stays in No.11 with her. Albert gets annoyed as Alice moves her own pieces of furniture into No.1. He runs out when she talks of marriage, causing her to cry. Reverend James asks a depressed Gordon to play at the church's folk evening on Friday but he's non-committal. Val asks him to join her and Ken for dinner. Jack and Len think Elsie's man is only doing a political survey. Alice admits to Minnie that Albert doesn't want her in the house. Minnie unwisely suggests that she forces the issue and make his mind up for him by bringing more of her stuff over. After the meal, Ken gets Gordon to join him for a drink in the Rovers and face Annie.
Part Two: Alice makes a special meal for Albert who is outraged when he pricks his finger on one of her cactus plants and throws a visiting Minnie out. Elsie is bad-tempered as night falls and she drinks in the Rovers with Dave. Annie is coldly polite towards Gordon. Albert is further annoyed when Alice moves her mynah bird Kitchener into No.1. She goes out to bingo. Val thinks Gordon will leave the street as soon as he can. Alice returns to find Kitchener and all her belongings dumped outside No.1. Albert refuses to answer her knocks on the door. Reverend James calms Maggie's fears that Gordon won't get over his failed engagement. Dave walks Elsie home and a man watches him drive off from the cover of the maisonettes. Alice sits out in the cold. The vicar finds her. The street is blacked out by a power cut. A terrified Elsie listens as someone seems to try to enter No.11.
