Plot[]
Part One: Effie entertains Ena, Minnie and Hilda to tea so they can look over the newly-decorated back room at No.1. Ena wonders how Albert will react when he sees it. Emily tries to drum up support for the residents to attend a meeting at St. Mary's Church to begin both a men and women's fellowship for community work. Lucille tells Jack she's got herself a new job doing accounts in an office. Reverend James tries to involve a reluctant Val in his scheme. Elsie finds Lucille at the betting shop. She tells her she's now working there and has quit The Pink Posy. Hilda finds Alice Pickins is cleaning at both the betting shop and St. Mary's, though she tells her that when she marries Albert, she'll be giving up both. Albert gets the bus from Bury but can't get into No.1. He isn't impressed with the fancy meal that Ken cooks for him and Val. Ena refuses to attend the church meeting as it's not her denomination. Albert is outraged by the decorated No.1 and storms out.
Part Two: Ken tries to get Val to agree to eat out, but she sees through him and teases him that he wants to give up his cooking duties. Albert sulks about his house in the snug but Ena isn't sympathetic. Stan tries to put up his charges. Annie agrees but tells him from now onwards she'll be getting Hilda to do the inside windows, so he'll be getting less money overall. Len counsels Lucille not to be put off men or she'll be very lonely. Annie, Hilda, Minnie, Emily and Alice are among the few attendees at the meeting where the vicar tries in vain to drum up enthusiasm. Elsie asks Dave if he fancies a night out and is put out when he brusquely tells her he's taking another woman out. Ken and Val give Effie advice on how to deal with Albert's sulks and tell him he's making a stupid fuss with his objections. He returns to Bury in high dudgeon. The vicar admits to Emily he's upset at his failure. Hilda finds out from Stan about her increased duties. Lucille dresses up for a night out. Len and Annie are appalled when it's Dave who comes into the Rovers to collect her.
