Plot[]
Part One: Effie tells Ena she's been to see the social security department and they were very helpful. Len and Maggie eat at a posh restaurant. He advises her that Gordon isn't like Les and to let him live his own life. Lucille tells Gordon to concentrate on his exam tomorrow and not think about the two of them. Val worries about going to a party at the house of Martin Hepworth, an old college friend of Ken's, worrying that she'll feel out of place. Maggie won't let Len in for a coffee, but thanks him for a nice evening, and saying she's glad they're friends. Gordon isn't happy to see them together. The next morning, Lucille frets about Gordon's exam. Maggie thinks Val ought to go to the party, otherwise Ken might go alone. Albert moves back into No.1. He agrees to babysit for Val when Effie offers to join him for company. Setting off for his exam, Gordon makes it clear to Maggie that he's not pleased about her and Len.
Part Two: Minnie rejects Ena's suggestion of Beelzebub for the cat's name. Len and Maggie agree to go out again. Ken and Val rush out, but Albert settles down to watch television rather than play cards with Effie. Val immediately feels out of place at the party with the conversation about the arts. A man named Carl sees that she has a drink. Gordon thinks the exam went badly. Jack suggests to Minnie that she puts a stop to Ena's teasing about the cat's name by agreeing to call it Beelzebub. Ena is appalled that her suggestion has been accepted. Reverend James asks Emily to help produce something for the children at Christmas and she suggests a pantomime. Val finds herself being sexually insulted at the party by Carl's humour and is disgusted to find three babies crying unattended in a bedroom. Len and Maggie go out again. She tells him there's little chance of Les returning. Back home, Ken sees a divide between him and Val when she says she hated the party while he hadn't enjoyed himself so much in months.
