Plot[]

Part One: Coming back from the party, Ken thinks he's seen Bobby, but has to report to Minnie that he ran off too quickly for him to catch. She wonders what to call her second cat. After clearing up, Annie is still stressing over Lucille and Gordon when they suddenly return, saying they were trying to go to Scotland. An apology has to be dragged out of her. Gordon tries to explain to the Walkers but Jack tells him to leave immediately and go and explain himself to his mother. He is shocked when Maggie refuses to discuss the matter with him. The next morning, Hilda tries to boast about the success of her marriage to Dickie and Audrey but is embarrassed by a hung-over Stan. Maggie tells Ena that Effie has no money whatsoever and her private slate shouldn't have been read. Maggie still refuses to talk to Gordon. She concocts a remedy for Stan who hears from Len, Ray and Emily just how much he put back last night. He refuses to drink the remedy. Ena is distracted, worried about Effie, and orders Minnie to invite her round after dinner.

Part Two: Effie isn't pleased to see Ena waiting for her in No.5. Ena tells her that she has more experience than her about how to live on a pension and can help her. Len makes Maggie a brew, ready to listen to her concerns about Gordon. Lucille and Gordon meet up to swap notes about how their loved ones are now treating them. Hilda makes a still-suffering Stan drink non-alcoholic drinks when they go into the Rovers. Ena invites Effie to join her and Minnie in the snug and buys her a drink. Maggie stuns Gordon by saying she's going out on a date for the first time in years. He's further shocked when it's Len who comes to collect her.

Notes[]

  • There is a possible continuity error between this and the previous episode. That one ran the end credits over a darkened Rovers' public with Jack Walker seeming to tell a worrying Annie Walker that they should turn in and leading her into the back. The first nine minutes of this episode are set immediately after the party and the first Rovers' scene shows Jack, Annie and Emily Nugent clearing up after the event.
  • In another continuity error, Ena Sharples tells Maggie Clegg she's never bought "on the tick" but in Episode 1 (9th December 1960), she tells Florrie Lindley to put her purchases on the slate.
  • TV Times synopsis: A surprise destination for the eloping lovers
  • Viewing Figures: First UK broadcast - 7,600,000 homes (1st place).
