Plot[]
Part One: Albert shows friend Jim Watson where he's staying. Minnie wonders what to get Ena for her birthday. Hurt from finding out from Annie about the proposal, Maggie argues with Gordon, saying he's jeopardising his future opportunities. She confesses that she needs him by her side now that Les has gone but he says he's not able to fulfil that role. Lucille is confident that Concepta will give her consent to her marriage. Effie asks Maggie if there are any jobs going, claiming she only needs to occupy her time. Audrey finds that Albert has added cakes and biscuits to their corner shop order. Gordon and Lucille plan their future. Minnie drops hints to Ena that she's bought her something antique. Plumbing merchant James Peck calls at the Rovers to see Emily and tell her that one of yard's cheques for £45 has bounced. He gives her and Ray three days to clear it. They realise they desperately need Len back. Val thinks Effie has become absent-minded recently. Minnie shows Ken a book from 1917 that she's bought for Ena, which is just a series of financial records for the year. Effie's television is repossessed as she can't pay the bill.
Part Two: Having been told that the television is being repaired, Maggie puts two and two together and calls on Effie. She admits that she's spent all her savings paying off her sister-in-law's debts and funeral costs. Maggie helps by offering to keep a special slate for her, private from the rest. Annie calls on Ken for advice and he agrees to talk to Gordon, even though he's not sympathetic to her view of the lad. His brusque attitude embarrasses Val. Jim and Albert's friends, Aaron Moore and Joseph Kettlewell, join them at No.3 for tea. Audrey returns from working at the petrol station and finds her back room fully occupied. Ken speaks with Gordon and tells him not to take matters seriously all the time. Minnie invites Albert to a birthday party she's throwing for Ena. Dickie and Audrey admit to Ena that they find Albert a handful. She advises them to get in touch with a lady called Alice Pickins. Len rings the Rovers and tells Emily he's returning on Monday.
