Plot[]
Part One: Stan sulks at the breakfast table and demands Jill stays silent. As it's half-term, Hilda thinks Stan ought to take the girl on his round. As Val complains, Ken tries to point out the positives of Albert staying with them. Ena tells Albert that he's imposing on Val, causing the two old people to argue across the corner shop. Jill runs rings round Stan, getting him to buy her sweets and chocolates as wages for working for him. Audrey rows with Gordon for the way he's treating Lucille and advises him to trust her more. Albert tells Val he doesn't sleep well in her maisonette and he's going to find somewhere else to stay, but still come back often for his meals. Ray is delighted when Emily turns up at the yard, willing to do the paperwork and get things in order for him. Jill asks Ray if she can play in the yard. Minnie refuses to take Albert in as it will upset Bobby. He thinks of asking Elsie and is shocked to find out she's gone away with Dave Smith. Ray rushes into the Rovers and tells Stan and Hilda to come to the yard quickly to see to Jill.
Part Two: Dickie gets Gordon to agree to go out with him that night. Emily tells Maggie that the yard business is sinking fast, despite Ray's best efforts. Jill has pulled some planks down and grazed her arm. Ray makes Stan tidy up the mess. He's not best pleased when Hilda gets permission from Jill's aunt for her to stay with them. Back at No.13, Jill promises to behave better as she goes to bed, and gets Stan to read to her. He starts to take to the little girl. Val wonders where Albert has got to when he doesn't return for his meal, not knowing he's eating with Audrey at No.3. She invites him to stay with her and Dickie for the week. He promises to tell her all about the First World War. Annie is shocked when Ray wonders aloud if Len is even alive.
