Part One: After a sleepless night, Elsie upbraids Ray for not telling her about Len's disappearance and then realises that he's been doing his best to keep the yard going. Hilda makes Jill a cooked Sunday breakfast, but the smell of the cooking wakes Stan up early. She has to hurry the girl out of the back door. Elsie asks Ken and Val's help with Len and is told not to worry. Realising why Elsie needs her friend, Ken tells her she's got to make up her own mind about going away with Dave. Hilda dumps Jill on Jack until opening time, when she knows Stan will be out of the way. Lucille asks Ray's permission to tell Gordon why she's helping him to prevent any jealousy, but he refuses. Hilda buys a bolt from Ray to prevent Stan going into the spare bedroom. Maggie tells Gordon not to take Lucille seriously and to enjoy himself. Albert has a week off work from the museum and buys flowers for Val, letting slip to Dave that he knows Len is missing. Elsie avoids discussing the matter with Dave.

Part Two: All the residents know about Jill but also know to keep the news from Stan. Lucille asks Jack's advice about Gordon. Dave tells Elsie there are no strings attached on going away with him and she accepts, despite knowing he's lying. Val is aggrieved to have Albert dump himself on her for a week. Gordon decides to go out but won't tell Maggie where. As they set off, Elsie isn't pleased to find out from Dave that their first stop is Wakefield. Minnie watches their departure disapprovingly and quickly spreads the news. Jack also finds out that Len is missing. Lucille calls on Gordon to go to a party and is told by Maggie that he's gone out with another girl. Albert winds Val up with his demands. Hilda tries to borrow more books from Val and finds out that the whole street knows about Jill. While she's out of the house, Stan comes home early from the Rovers and finds Jill hiding in his bed.
