Plot[]

Part One: Annie is dissatisfied with Stan's cleaning at the Rovers and monitors him closely. With the gawpers still giving the pub extra business, Lucille cancels her plans and helps out behind the bar. Dot is fuming at Gregg's alibi of being with another woman but Elsie points out that she's doing the same to Walter. Dave tells Elsie that the police have asked him about the £1,000 that Steve owed him and wonders who told them. P.C. Conway asks to see the corner shop stock as there's been a problem with stolen groceries. Minnie is startled to see him coming out of the back when she calls at the shop. Len finds it hard to keep his mind on the job. Elsie calls at the yard and extracts a confession from Len that he told the police about Dave. Annie continues to keep on Stan's back. More reporters call at the Rovers and Ken tells them what he thinks of them. Ena blags more free drinks out of them. As part of their job swap, Stan fetches Hilda's fish and chip dinner but is put out to find out that she's earned as much in two days as he does in a week.

Part Two: Jack enjoys getting one over Annie when she gets it wrong about the day on which their wedding anniversary falls next week. Wound up by Lucille, Minnie is afraid that Conway is after her. Hilda decides to take the rest of the week off but holds Stan into doing the housework. Ray and Len argue with each other, the strain getting to them. Dave calls at the yard and "thanks" Len for pointing the police in his direction. Ray has to pull Len off him when he insinuates that Len pushed Steve down the stairs. Ena sees that Minnie is on edge, but she won't tell her why. Dot bickers with Gregg about his other woman. Det. Inspector Castle calls at The Pink Posy and tells Elsie to come to the station with him.

Notes[]

  • In arguing with Ken Barlow about the behaviour of the press, the reporter mentions their reporting of the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia which had taken place some eight weeks before this episode as a plus point in favour of their profession.
  • A camera pan in the snug of the Rovers goes too far to the left and shows the edge of the set.
  • TV Times synopsis: Len admits he pointed the finger
  • Viewing Figures: First UK broadcast - 7,100,000 homes (2nd place).

Notable dialogue[]

Len Fairclough (to Elsie Tanner): "It's just like old times, isn't it? You and me - giving them something spicy to think about."
