Plot[]
Part One: A tired Elsie is cagey with Dave about where she was last night. Emily finds discrepancies in the office files when a customer claims he hasn't received his delivery, despite paying cash in advance. Len calls on Elsie at the shop and tells her he heard her crying and pacing during the night. Despite his firmness, she refuses to tell him what happened and refuses to give him Steve's address so he can sort him out. She's nervous that he won't drop the matter. Ena returns from holiday in New Brighton a week early as Minnie is ill. After seeing to her friend, she intends to return to the corner shop, unaware that Val is already behind the counter. Val sees that something is bothering Elsie. Gregg gives Steve's address to Len who sets off immediately to find him.
Part Two: Emily takes another call from a customer who hasn't received his order. Having gone through the books, she realises that she is the only secretary at the firm, although there are supposed to be another two according to Arnold. Elsie tells Val that Steve wants her back, saying he won't divorce her under any circumstances. Val counsels Elsie to be honest about her feelings and is told she has none left for her husband. She has no idea where things go now. When Mr Gunter contradicts Arnold's memory as to the names of the other two supposed office girls, Emily tells him she checked and that none of them appear in the wages' book. She walks out, telling him she's not a sucker and has put one of the disgruntled customers and the police on to his crooked deals. Ena tells Len he has no right to interfere between Elsie and Steve. Flattered by the GIs, Hilda asks Stan for a new cocktail dress for Christmas but he shoots her down in flames. Strange allies Dave and Len compare notes about Elsie, and both admit neither knows whether to help her or not. Ena returns to work, only to find Val in her place as she's made nursery arrangements for the twins. Ena tells Maggie she now has a second assistant.
