Plot[]
Part One: Gordon avoids Lucille when she calls see him. Emily tells Jack she's uncertain what sort of business her office actually transacts. Jack passes on a message from Annie to Lucille that she's to find herself a job. Steve rings Elsie constantly. She lets slip that she's working again. Lucille catches Gordon when he returns from college for his lunch. He makes no effort to meet her halfway. Ken tells Maggie he's received a call at work from someone with an American accent asking if he knows where Elsie works. Len is annoyed with the bad influences that Dot is supposedly bringing into Elsie's house. Mr Gunter gives Emily the run around, asking her to call at Manchester Docks and then do household errands for him. Dot realises the block on Elsie's phone has been removed when she answers it and hears Steve. She rings Gregg, worried that Elsie knows that Steve is after her. Having found out where she works, Steve rings The Pink Posy. Elsie has to be careful what she says as Lucille is listening, as she has called in to see if there are any jobs going. Elsie orders a taxi for herself at 8.30pm to go to Steve's flat.
Part Two: Emily finds herself working late and is given letters to post on her way home and more errands for tomorrow. Lucille worries that she alienates people by being too flip. Gregg and Dot tell Dave what Steve is really like, citing him threatening to tell Walter about their friendship. Elsie arrives at Steve's flat. Len thinks Elsie has gone out with Dave, but Jack says the bookie was in only minutes before with Dot and Gregg. Gordon calls to see Lucille but needs a spot of Dutch courage first. Dot, Dave and the GIs enjoy a card school in No.11. Joe reveals that Steve blackmailed him over an old army transgression to obtain Elsie's work address. Dot and Gregg go out to avoid meeting Elsie when she returns. Lucille and Gordon apologise to each other. Their music wakes up an exhausted Emily. Elsie returns to the street in floods of tears. Len can hear her sobs through his bedroom wall.
